with you. If you have a book idea or manuscript that you think may
be suitable for us, then please complete the proposal below providing
as much detail as possible. This will help our editors, reviewers,
and marketing and sales people to decide whether it is commercially
viable.

Tell us how you would characterize the content of your book, for
example, does the book extend our theoretical understanding of a
topic; provide policy analysis; provide how-to or practical advice
for professionals; or is it a synthesis of an existing material
or an original work?
Why is the subject of your book important?
Submit a draft table of contents
Submit chapter summaries separate from the table of contents and,
if appropriate, authorship
Submit sample chapters (if available) and/or the introduction (the
more material you can send the better)
Has any or all of the work been published before, such as in a journal
or conference proceeding? If so, please give details
Subject category and classification
List the main topics in your book.
What professional/academic categories or subjects best describe
it, for example, economics, natural resource management, business,
environmental science, architecture, information and communication
technology, or development
Would you classify the book as a textbook, monograph, edited collection,
reference work (that is, a dictionary or directory), report, handbook,
manual or field guide, or other?)
Level
What level(s) of readership is the book directed at, for example,
undergraduate, post-graduate, academic, professional, or policy-maker?

Describe why the book is needed, that is, what gap it addresses
in the literature and market, and how it addresses this need

List competing titles already available and how they relate to your
book, and explain how your book will be different in theoretical
approach, method, structure, and content
Collected or edited works
If a collected or multi-authored edited work, describe the contribution
that the editor(s) will make to unifying the material, drawing out
themes, and adding value through the introduction and conclusion
as well as the general editorial process
Geographic appeal
What is the geographic appeal of the book? Is the content, such
as case studies, drawn primarily from one geographic area of the
world? How might this affect the international appeal of the book
and what can be done to ensure the broadest possible readership?
Form and shelf life
Explain why the material is best suited to a book form rather than
another form of media such as a journal paper, magazine article,
or delivery via the web
What is the shelf life of the book?
Review process
Have peers/external examiners reviewed the proposal/manuscript?
If so please supply copies of such reviews if available and briefly
describe the review process
Please supply the names, positions, and contact details
for three people with the expertise to read and comment on your
proposal.
Have you submitted the book to any other publishers?
If so, please list the names of the same.
Provide an approximate word count or estimate of the complete text
including all references, annexes, and the bibliography.
Will your book have any of the following: foreword, preface, references,
footnotes/endnotes, bibliography, glossary, annexe(s), reading list,
other? If so, briefly describe this material.
Describe the number and types of illustrations (for example, photographs,
line drawings/figures, maps/floor plans, tables, graphs, and flow
charts) and mathematical formulae.
Do any of the above need to be printed in colour?
Provide a time schedule for completion and submission of the final
manuscript and details of any deadlines we should be aware of, for
example, an impending conference, meeting, or book launch.
Does your book have any special design/printing specifications (size,
binding, inclusion of a CD-ROM, etc.)? If so, please describe the
same.
In what form will you be able to supply the final manuscript, for
example, as standard Word files?
As the author/editor, you have valuable insight into the readership
and markets for your book. Please provide as much qualitative and
quantitative detail as possible about the prospective primary and
secondary markets for your book.
